Ready Set Read

Writer's picture: KathrynKathryn

Reading the Bible can feel intimidating, but when you set up a structure it becomes such a beautiful and necessary part of your daily life. Regardless of if you are new to reading the Bible or you have read it before perhaps some of this will help you get on a nice routine:

1.)     Choose a specific time and place.

2.)     Set up a space that feels comfortable and quiet.

3.)     Put your cell phone on airplane mode.

4.)     Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to center yourself.

5.)     Pray a simple prayer like this before you begin- "Lord thank you for the time to be with you today. I come before you as your child in wonder and awe of your Holy word. Teach me what you need me to understand and let this time set the tone for how I love you, others, and myself today. Amen.”

6.)     If you prefer structure, print off a checklist to read a specific number of chapters per day or try setting a timer between 10 and 20 minutes per day.

7.)     If you prefer spontaneity, write down all the books of the Bible in a journal. Ask God to point out which book of the Bible He wants you to read. Take your time reading and taking notes in a special journal. Once you complete the book check it off your list.

8.)     Some love to highlight and make notes on the side margins of their Bible. You can get special highlighters that do not bleed through to the other side of the pages, which makes it even more fun. I was so excited when mine arrived!

9.)     As you read the scripture ask the Holy Spirit to point out words, people, places, or things He wants to highlight to you. Be curious about what it might mean to the people of that time or perhaps what it might mean for you or contemporary society.

Do not give up even if you can only read a passage a day! You will find quickly that you cannot go a day without meeting God in your special place with Him.

Would You?

It is an unpopular message to reflect on, but it is a necessary examination of our hearts and consciences. The question is, would you?...

When Enough is Enough

Sometimes, getting up and saying good morning to God is enough. Sometimes, telling him you aren’t sure what to do next is enough....
